Picturesque York, a Cathedral City in northern England, is blessed to have some of the UK’s best pubs dotted throughout its cobblestone streets.
We’ve rounded up our favourites for you to visit as part of your UK adventure or a day/night trip from London.
Guy Fawkes Inn
If you recognise the name, then yes, you’ve guessed it! This is where the infamous rebel Guido Fawkes, who attempted to blow up Parliament in 1605, was born in what is now a guest house that you can see from the garden. The pub is a stone’s throw from the Minster, so after wandering the court and snapping a few pictures, have a drink in the cosy interior or the pretty beer gardens at the back!
Location: 25 High Petergate, York YO1 7HP
Lendal Cellars
It’s definitely the interior you’ll come for at Lendal Cellars. The beer garden is more functional than aesthetically pleasing (if you’re after a picturesque outdoor seat, there are far prettier choices in York). But inside is cosy and intimate, with exposed brick and charming arches over the tables – perfect for a date night!
Location: 26 Lendal, York YO1 8AA
Punch Bowl
Built in the 17th-century, the Punch Bowl is one of York's oldest - it's pubs also allegedly one of the city’s most haunted. It’s said that the ghost of a former landlord, a woman killed by a customer, AND the spectre of a woman waiting behind the bar, forever looking for her lover all haunt the pub. These days, it serves customers with a great atmosphere!
Location: 7 Stonegate, York YO1 8AN
Pivni
The overhanging façade on Patrick Pool is a medieval timepiece. Captivatingly placed by Shambles Market, Pivni serves up a fantastic array of craft beers in the 16th-century townhouse over two floors. Right by the iconic landmark Shambles (namesake to the market), arguably the world’s best-preserved medieval street – wander the street and collect a cute souvenir or two before indulging in Pivni.
Location: 6 Patrick Pool, York YO1 8BB
Golden Fleece
One of the most haunted pubs in the UK (if that’s your thing), the Golden Fleece was mentioned in the city archives as far back as 1503. A cosy environment with live music and beds for your stay!
Location: 16 Pavement, York YO1 9UP
The Three Tuns
Serving locals and visitors since 1782, the Three Tuns is a quintessentially British pub, packed with history, cool facts dotted throughout, and great food too!
Location: 12 Coppergate, York YO1 9NR
