Winchester is a beautiful cathedral city in Hampshire, England full of history and excellent pubs. Though home to a university, Winchester’s pubs go far beyond a student dive. We’ve rounded up our favourite pubs in the city to help you plan your Winchester pub crawl!
The Royal Oak
Established way back in 1002, The Royal Oak is steeped in history. It was once the resident of Emma of Normandy, England’s first Queen.
The Stable
Specialising in local ciders and delicious craft pizzas, The Stable perfectly combines a rustic and industrial atmosphere with long wooden tables, exposed brick, and pioneering pizzas. Did we mention the pizza?
Eclipse
Just around from The Stable, is Eclipse. Built in the 16th century Eclipse is timber clad pub serving up classic ales and a traditional menu. A must visit for a cosy Sunday afternoon.
Bishop on the Bridge
A lovely gastropub overlooking the River Itchen, Bishop on the Bridge is an excellent choice for a Pimm’s or pints on a hot summer afternoon. Definitely be sure to grab a table outside with a view of the river if you can.
The William Walker
Named for the famous diver who single-handedly saved Winchester Cathedral from sinking between 1906 and 1911 (a truly wild story that we might explain in a different post), The William Walker is a Victorian pub in the heart of the city. The modern inside may be a surprise but is still well decorated and the food is great too!
The Black Boy
This pub is truly wild and may be one of our favourites in the UK. Named for chimney sweeps, the interiors are mad – do a lap around the bar to take in the elaborate taxidermy, vintage paraphernalia, and old school metal signs. Challenge your friends to a game of table football before heading into the expansive garden to relax.
The Old Vine
Around the corner from Winchester Cathedral, The Old Vine has a lovely traditional atmosphere with exposed wood beams and a brick clad fireplace. We recommend getting a table overlooking the cathedral grounds to tuck into delicious pub food and wine list.
